چکیده
The aim of the present study was to screen the serum of blood donors, which are apparently healthy and residing in Pondicherry or its neighboring districts of Tamil Nadu State, for specific detection of Cysticercus antigens and antibodies. A total of 216 blood samples were collected from blood donors at the Central Blood Bank, JIPMER Hospital, Pondicherry, India during January and February 2004. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to demonstrate anti-Cysticercus antibodies and the Co-agglutination (CoA) was used to detect antigen in sera. 14 (6.48 %) males were positive for either anti-Cysticercus antibodies or antigens. Of these eight sera were positive for anti-Cysticercus antibodies and six were positive for antigens. Results of the present study show that serum Cysticercus antigen detection may be a useful adjunct to antibody testing for seroprevalence studies of cysticercosis in the community. The present study is the first kind of study, carried out to determine both cysticercal antibodies as well as antigens in the serum samples collected from the healthy blood donors.

Prevalence and Haemolytic Significance of Red Cell Antibodies among Dangerous Universal Donors in a Tertiary Care Hospital in South India
Background and Aims: A subgroup of group O individuals called ‘dangerous universal donors’ have immune (IgG) anti A and anti B antibodies which are active at 37˚C and capable of reacting with the red cells and causing lysis. The aim of this study was to find the prevalence of dangerous O group among the voluntary donor population and to assess the relation between the degree of haemolysis and t...
متن کاملDot-ELISA for the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis.
The aim of the present study was to standardize and evaluate dot-Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (Dot-ELISA), a simple and rapid test for the detection of cysticercus antibodies in the serum for the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis (NCC). The antigen used in the study was a complete homogenate of Cysticercus cellulosae cysts obtained from infected pigs and dotted on to nitrocellulose membrane....
متن کاملProfile and protective role of 61kDa and 47kDa antigens of Edwardsiella tarda in rohu (Labeo rohita)
Edwardsiella tarda is a versatile pathogen that could survive in different environmental conditions and infect economically important fish species. The whole cell antigenic proteins were extracted from E. tarda and assessed via Western blot using anti E. trada rohu and anti E. trada rabbit serum. Two strong reacted proteins with antibodies were recovered viz 61 kDa and 47 kDa from SDS PAGE gels...
متن کاملEvaluation of platelet antigens and antibodies in patients with platelet refractoriness
Abstract Background and Objectives Immune platelet refractoriness is a complication of blood transfusion in patients with multiple platelet transfusions. Antibodies against surface antigens, including human platelet antigens (HPAs) and human leukocyte antigens (HLAs), can be produced which can cause the degradation of transfused platelets by macrophages. In this study, the frequency of platele...
متن کاملMolecular detection of hepatitis delta virus in blood donors with RT-PCR
Abstract Background and Objective: Hepatitis delta virus is an imperfect virus with RNA and its activity depends on the presence of hepatitis B virus. This virus can lead to acute and chronic diseases in the liver. This study aimed to detect the hepatitis delta virus in blood donors with positive Hepatitis B Surface Antigens (HBsAg). Material and Methods: In this Study, 350 serum sa...
